collaborative tools

Simplicity is the watchword for the methodology, thus paving the way for participants from a wide range of backgrounds to interact. Our collaborative technology, decision-making processes and experiential simulations are all designed to enable more effective interaction ... and action.

Enhancing face-to-face interaction

The TEAMWIN Collaborator comprises a portable, server-based kit of wirelessly connected up-to-the-minute netbooks, created for use by conference or workshop participants. Our use of the technology facilitates the:

sharing/clarification of knowledge
open and constructive exchange of views, as all contributions are anonymous
creative process of brainstorming, categorising, synthesising, distilling, prioritising
equal involvement of people from different cultural backgrounds, languages, levels and functions
capture of inputs directly rather than through the lens of a third party or rapporteur.

It is driven by software with a wide range of functionality, allowing participants to input, capture and share in real time questions, comments and ideas. These can be simultaneously projected on a big screen as well as on every netbook to expedite the debate/discussion/conversation, either in plenary or sub-groups.

The system captures all inputs, and is particularly suited to text-rich content, thus providing invaluable original material for final transcripts and reports. Raw transcripts are taken off the server in real time and circulated as hard copies to aid the progression of the debate. They are eventually aggregated to create final transcripts and high level or strategic reports.

Balancing trade-offs in decision-making

The following tools are available for those seeking greater objectivity, collaboration, consistency and transparency when making decisions in complex and high risk situations.

The TEAMWIN Decision-Navigator is a decision-making process for people in the humanitarian sector who often have to balance ethical and practical considerations in extremely difficult situations. Key elements are derived from the Red Cross Code of Conduct and connected to both the principle of 'Do No Harm' and proportionality in human rights law.

This tool enables enhanced collaboration between people at different levels within the same organisation, as well as between agencies. A user-friendly interactive website makes application of the process easy and fast, and captures the course of each decision made so that over time a very helpful repository is built for future reference.

In addition, we offer a suite of sophisticated quantitative methods (typically including hierarchical Bayesian analyses, latent class or multinomial logit models) to help decision-makers by:

facilitating the timely input of all relevant stakeholders
determining the relative weight of each factor at play in these risk-benefit choices
identifying common perspectives or themes (segmentation) that may exist across the different levels, types and locations of stakeholders
providing a simple decision-support tool that may be applied consistently across the globe
making clear where consensus and/or disagreement exists between stakeholders - given the different values they may place on the same risk or outcome
inviting other trusted parties into the process - enabling them to rapidly contribute their views on the same basis as those down the line
opening the potential (in time, and if/where desirable) to introduce other important decision criteria into the trade-off process e.g. political or economic considerations.

Challenging and energising

The TEAMWIN Mat and other novel teambuilding devices are used to challenge and energise teams. Participants take a 'test drive' and discover for themselves fresh insights into high performance teamwork and leadership. Exercises model relationships at key interfaces to break down barriers, and typically different parties find these sessions highly enjoyable and memorable.
